Aeolian — A Flagship Façade for Harvey Nichols Kuwait

Fabricating the architectural metalwork for one of the Gulf’s most prestigious retail openings — and engineering a bespoke fixing system to bring artist Giles Miller’s desert-inspired louvred façade to life on the building’s exterior.

CLIENT: Alshaya Group / Harvey Nichols
LOCATION: The Avenues, Kuwait
ARTIST: Giles Miller Studio
SCOPE: Façade Metalwork & Fixing System

THE PROJECT

When Harvey Nichols opened its flagship store at The Avenues in Kuwait, every element had to meet the standards of one of the world’s most recognised luxury retail brands. Chasestead Ltd was appointed as specialist metalwork fabricator for the project’s centrepiece: the building’s exterior façade, conceived by London-based surface artist Giles Miller Studio.

In collaboration with Giles Miller Studio — surface designers and artists whose work transforms materials into large-scale architectural experiences. Their concept for this project, titled Aeolian, was named after the wind-formed landscapes that define the Kuwaiti desert.

THE DESIGN

Giles Miller’s concept for the façade drew directly from Kuwait’s natural landscape. Titled Aeolian — a reference to wind-shaped desert formations — the design translates the sweeping geometry of sand dunes into a richly textured louvred surface. The rhythm of the angled louvres also evokes the natural patterns of palm bark, grounding the installation in local culture and environment.

Layered and rhythmic, the façade captures light and shadow, creating a sense of movement that feels both monumental and serene.

The result is a sculptural skin that shifts in appearance throughout the day as light rakes across the angled metal surfaces — a living façade that responds to its environment rather than imposing upon it.

THE CHALLENGE

Translating Giles Miller’s design from concept to a permanent architectural installation at this scale presented significant technical demands. The louvred metalwork had to be fabricated to tight tolerances and finished to the level expected of a luxury retail environment — every surface visible, every detail scrutinised.

The central engineering problem was attachment. The louvred panels needed to be fixed securely to the face of the building in a way that was structurally sound, capable of withstanding Kuwait’s climate, and completely invisible from the front — preserving the clean, uninterrupted aesthetic of the design. No existing off-the-shelf fixing solution was adequate. A bespoke system would have to be designed and built specifically for this installation.

OUR APPROACH

Working closely with Giles Miller Studio, architects, and the project’s structural engineers, Chasestead developed an entirely bespoke holding and fixing system from scratch. The system was engineered to manage the structural loads, accommodate on-site installation tolerances, and remain completely hidden behind the façade panels.

The metalwork itself was fabricated in our workshop to exacting specifications, with materials and surface treatments selected to perform in Kuwait’s demanding heat and humidity while maintaining the premium appearance the brief demanded. Every component was pre-fitted and verified before despatch, minimising remedial work on site and ensuring installation could proceed to schedule.

THE OUTCOME

The completed Aeolian façade was installed successfully at The Avenues, Kuwait, forming the exterior centrepiece of the Harvey Nichols flagship. The bespoke fixing system performed exactly as engineered — holding the louvred panels securely, with no visible fixings interrupting the surface from street level.

For Chasestead, the project represents the kind of commission that defines what we do: technically demanding, design-led, and uncompromising in the standard of finish required. The collaboration with Giles Miller Studio brought together artistic vision and precision fabrication to create something that neither could have achieved alone.

KEY OUTCOMES:

A purpose-engineered attachment solution designed, prototyped and tested specifically for this installation.

Close working with Giles Miller Studio to faithfully realise the Aeolian design concept at architectural scale.

Metalwork fabricated and finished to meet Harvey Nichols’ exacting brand standards throughout.

Materials and processes specified to endure Kuwait’s extreme heat and humidity long-term.
